Akiko Okamoto

Akiko Okamoto has been living in Germany since 1996. She completed her studies at the Ruhr University Bochum, major: Film and Television Studies, minors: Art History and Chinese Studies, with a Master’s degree in 2007. She lives and works in Düsseldorf and is a freelance curator and translator of Japanese and German. She initiated the program series “Nippon Performance Nights” in 2013, which since has been continuously hosted by the FFT Düsseldorf up until today. As curator she presents current works from Japan and from Japanese artists living in Europe and Germany and gives them a stage in Düsseldorf. Hereby, she mainly focuses on experimental performative art. In addition to her curatorial work for the FFT Düsseldorf, she frequently works for individual projects by various artists, like Sebastian Matthias or Gintersdorfer/Klassen, and also for institutions such as tanzhaus nrw, PACT Zollverein, Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, as well as for international festivals including Tanzkongress, internationale tanzmesse nrw and Ruhrtriennale. She has a widespread international network in the field of performing arts at her disposal.
